We have teachers from kinder to fourth doing amazing things to connect with others, locally and globally. This is a great example of using technology to do things that would otherwise not work. Imagine reading Number the Stars by Lois Lowry, then participating in a Mystery Skype with someone from Germany who can tell you real life history and experiences! What about reinforcing number sense and 100s chart skills by "Hanging" with a class across the district to identify a mystery number? How about participating in a Hangout with a famous author or scientist? All of these are possible. Want more info or need help connecting to someone? Just ask!

Instructional Tidbits: Have you tried using the green screen equipment yet? The kids love video projects! There are unlimited possibilities with the green screen. Students create their own backgrounds using Google Slides or Wixie, then I use those with our TriCaster and green screen to make them appear like they are really there, just like the weather man! What projects could you see your kids doing with the green screen this year? Updates:

Digital Learning Day is coming up next week! What can you do in your classroom to promote Digital Learning? See the official website for videos, webinars, and contests. We will have a district-wide slow Twitter chat, meaning the questions will take place over the entire day, instead of scrunched into one hour. I challenge every teacher to incorporate digital learning and tweet about it on Feb. 17th! Want a better challenge? Make it a paperless day! No worksheets or handouts! Independent books are fine, and won't count against you. If you want to accept the challenge of making Feb. 17th a paperless day, tweet to @brooksteacher, #hpisdtech, #DLDay and you'll have a prize in your box! If you want help designing the day, I'd love to help! I just returned from TCEA and have more to share. Stay tuned! Updates:
Instructional Tidbits: This week I'm typing from the TCEA keynote with Charles Best, founder of Donors Choose. They are a non-profit crowd funding organization started by a High School teacher from the Bronx. Many of you may have donated or had your own project on the site. We are lucky and grateful to have a solid source of funding in our district, but with that can sometimes come complacency. I wonder what could happen in our classrooms if we could ask for anything. Not just the usual technology, classroom books, and math manipulatives. Not a set of shiny fine point Sharpies, post-it chart paper, or reversible border. Anything. What would transform your classroom? What would make learning come alive? Think big! At this conference, I'm reminded how big changes start with small steps. Teachers and administrators are doing amazing things for students and learning. They all started with an idea. Maybe it took them a while to get started. Maybe the launched into it after reading a blog or attending a conference. Whatever the path, they started. What will YOU start today? |
