I love the last part, saying, "Best Practice Starts Now." Why wait? The article is not about technology, but more about the space and the environment created. In this type of space, technology can be a valuable tool and resource. http://www.edutopia.org/blog/flexible-seating-student-centered-classroom-kayla-delzer.

Instructional Tidbits: We've had technology integration in education for some time now, although it may look a little different than a decade or two (or three) ago. I remember having a giant Texas Instruments computer wheeled in to my third grade classroom about twice. There was an equally large book of programs that went along with it, taking up the entire lower shelf of the cart. We sat there, taking turns entering lines from a page of the book (that seemed to take hours). At the end of the time, if nothing was wrong, something would happen on the screen. Maybe a balloon would appear. There was little connection to why we did this, or how it fit into what we were learning. Technology integration looks a lot different now! We see technology as a tool for learning, just as a ruler is a tool for math. Students are using technology to learn, but also to SHOW their learning. They can collaborate with others. They can practice communication skills. They are using problem solving and critical thinking skills. They are practicing digital citizenship strategies. All of this, while applying the math, reading, writing, science, social studies, and character skills they are already learning. Unlike my third grade class, teachers have a well thought out connection behind using technology at the right time, for the right lesson. It is part of the lesson as a whole. All of the above can also be linked to our state standards. We have an obligation, by law, to teach all of our grade level Technology Application Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills. http://goo.gl/pGi7eg. That brings me to an app I'd like to share with you! It is the TEKS app (icon is yellow, with black Texas), and it is free! You'll always have the TEKS at the touch of a button, which will help in team planning, parent conferences, meetings, etc. This week's prize goes to any TEAM who looks at the Technology Application TEKS for their grade level during their planning meeting (this week or next). ONE person on the team must tweet a picture of the entire team with the web or app version of the TA TEKS, and a specific student expectation you will soon cover in your grade level! Updates:

End of Year forms will be sent out in a few weeks. In the meantime, you may want to start backing up/transferring files. As you are using subscriptions, remember to put passwords in a safe place, so they are ready for August! Instructional Tidbits: Thinking of implementing new technology for SDAS next year? This might be the perfect time to try it out! As a classroom teacher I would often begin new systems at the end of the year while my class was already in a structure and routine that was comfortable. A good rule of thumb is to not have too many new variables. A new class, a new year, and a new technology is too much! This would be a perfect time to implement GAFE- Docs, Slides, Forms, or Classroom. See me for ideas and you'll be ready to rock and roll in August! |
