Instructional Tidbits: Last week the tech team attended Region 10's Digital Fluency Academy. We learned a lot about digital literacy vs. digital fluency. Literacy is knowing HOW and WHAT to use. Fluency is knowing WHEN and WHY. There is a big difference. Too often we find ourselves using technology for the sake of using technology- because it is there and someone told us to use it. The really fluent teachers, however, have a purpose. Always. They use it seamlessly with other instructional tools to enhance lessons, provide a different perspective or opportunity, and empower their students. Think about the last few technology experiences in your classroom. Did it reach digital literacy or fluency? Look at the graphic below about Highly Effective Teachers Who Use Technology. They:

Instructional Tidbits: For years, we have heard keynote speakers stress the importance of innovation, creativity, and collaboration in our schools. We know businesses are looking for these types of skills in the workforce. Technology is a great way to bring some of these skills together while still focusing on the required content. I subscribe to Carl Hooker's blog and thought his recent article was a perfect tie in for this topic. Please see some great ideas about innovation. I'm proud to say a lot of these are already happening around the school, even from week 1! READ THIS ARTICLE If you are still reading this, tweet one idea from Mr. Hooker's list that you will try THIS WEEK and use @brooksteacher. Congratulations to first grade teacher, Noelle Thiering! Noelle won an Amazon gift card, just for reading last week's blog and following the secret message! Easy! Thanks for reading, Noelle! There may be more hidden (not so hidden) messages this week and in the future. Updates:
Instructional Tidbits: By the end of the week each class will have had their initial Digital Citizenship lesson from Mrs. Riley and I. It is important to not only post the posters in your room (can be found in tech resources), but to remind them about our LARK rules EVERY time they use technology. Our students need constant reminders when it comes to being Legal, Appropriate, Responsible, and Kind. Mrs. Riley and I will continue to pair up for lessons, but the best lesson will come from their classroom teachers on a daily basis! Here are the resources: http://goo.gl/sSnfWp Feel free to review videos and procedures in class! |
