There's nothing worse than having a room full of kids engaged in an awesome project, then all of the sudden half the room's devices don't work. If sound is your issue, read on! When you are recording and your playback is just static (no other audible sound), there are a few things to check. Here are the steps if you have an external USB microphone, like we do in our computer lab setting. On the bottom right side of the taskbar, right click on the sound icon. Select "Recording devices" If there is more than one microphone option checked, choose the one that you don't want to use, right click, and select "disable". In the picture below I do not want the SoundMAX Integrated Microphone, therefore I will right click and disable it so that the USB microphone is the only one in use. If you hear absolutely no sound at all, check the settings and do the opposite. If you do not see a microphone, or there is not a check, make sure the microphone is plugged in correctly. Next, be sure to make the microphone you want to use the default by right clicking and selecting "Set as default".
In addition, be sure you have selected "Allow" if a box comes up in your program asking to use your microphone. Often kids will X out, due to habit, rather than reading the message and responding appropriately. This may require you to close the program and open it to prompt the message again, although depending on the program, it may have settings you can change.
