Yes, it's Wednesday again, but Tech Wednesday just doesn't have the same ring! K-2 had 2 great days of learning with TCRWP Monday and Tuesday. Thanks for letting me step out of my tech role for brief periods of time as we learn more about reading and writing! I'll be with 3-4 next week.

Time for spring cleaning! Please fill out the following form to remove desktops or other technology devices. We need this by Friday. Removal will be scheduled after Friday. https://goo.gl/gPF0jq Instructional Tidbits: Your students are more independent this time of year, and have stamina to sustain in their work. They have become comfortable with you and your class setting. Now, more than ever, is a great time to stop and have a digital citizenship discussion. It is not wise to assume that behaviors from the beginning of the year always transfer to the spring semester, plus it is just a great reminder for all of us! Here are some resources: http://goo.gl/Qj8Ko3. Take a pic of your class discussing digital citizenship, tweet out an important thought or idea to @brooksteacher, and you will receive a prize! Instructional Tidbits: Working on a research project soon? Please remember we have purchased several online databases that provide our students a safe environment. Never let them Google a topic, image, etc. One, it is just not safe. Two, it isn't good searching technique. There are too many invalid resources, plus the chance that the first few options are on a child's readability level are very slim. I encourage you to use the databases and sites listed on the Armstrong Library page here. Google came out with a kid friendly search engine called Kiddle. You may remember us talking about Google Custom Search Engines, where you can basically make your own search engine with any websites you want, narrowing down the entire internet to only a handful of websites. Kiddle is their way of making searching safer for kids. I caution you however, to continue to teach Digital Citizenship in your class. It is not just about what pops up on the screen in a search, but also enforcing LARK rules. On top of LARK you have validity, plagiarism, citing, etc. that must be addressed. If you want help creating your own custom search engine for a project, let me know! I used these back when I was a 2nd and 3rd grade teacher and loved that I could hand pick websites, thereby funneling them to students, while still allowing them to search on their own. |
