Instructional Tidbits: Why Twitter? Twitter is a social media tool that is used for communication. It allows only 140 characters, so thoughts must be brief. Pictures and videos can be posted. Yes, you can follow celebrities and politicians, but I believe it is worth so much more. I have an account I use for professional purposes and have a large personal learning network of educators and gurus all over the world. I can look to them for ideas, insight, and different perspectives. I can have back and forth conversations with people I would otherwise not be able to talk to in real life. Who are some of my favorite people on Twitter?
Start following someone today, and see what it is all about. There are way more ideas and cool things to do with your account. We'll talk more! Fill out this form with your Twitter info by Friday at noon and receive a prize! https://goo.gl/86BO3b

Instructional Tidbits: This week is Digital Citizenship week! What a great time to stop and teach a lesson on digital citizenship. Use Common Sense Media for ideas: https://www.commonsensemedia.org/educators/digitalcitizenshipweek. This would also be a good time to mention Digital Citizenship in your communication to parents. In the Common Sense Media resources there are lots of ideas for parents, including a Device Free Dinner. Remember, being a good Digital Citizen requires lots of skills. Just like regrouping, inferencing, and building a hypothesis doesn't come naturally, neither does Digital Citizenship. Many of us use reminders of LARK and good practices on a daily basis, but explicit lessons are also needed. Take time this week to have a discussion, act out a scenario, watch a video, or simply answer questions about Digital Citizenship with your students. A little time now, will save you time in the future! Digital Citizenship includes: LARK Internet Safety Internet Security Safe Searching Netiquette Care of Devices Digital Footprint/ Permanent and Public Copyright Cyber Bullying Here are some great lesson resources: https://www.commonsensemedia.org/educators/scope-and-sequence Tweet a picture of a Digital Citizenship lesson in your class this week to @brooksteacher, and win a prize! Use hashtag #digcit. Updates:
Instructional Tidbits: Even if you can't join us Thursday for our district-wide Twitter chat, please take a minute to look over the questions and reflect about your classroom practices. Everyone who participates in the Twitter chat on Thursday by introducing yourself, posting answers, and replying to retweeting will receive a special prize! Your account must be public and you need to use the hashtag #hpisdtech on each tweet to be "seen" by others. Try it and see how easy professional development and building professional learning communities can be! |
